Housing prehistoric artifacts dating back 600 years, the construction of this outstanding museum began in 1935 and was completed two years later. The impressive entrance is in the style of a Sassanian palace (Taq-e Kasra or Ivan-e Mada’en).
The museum’s collection covers the pre-Islamic period of Iranian civilization as well as the Islamic era with handsome, well-marked displays. The museum is particularly rich in the Achaemenid and Sassanian periods. Due to the imposed war, it was closed until 1987, when it was reopened to visitors.
