Iran is a country with many different forms of handicrafts. Tourists usually prefer to buy these handicrafts as souvenirs. Saffron and sweets are also bought as souvenirs.
Handicrafts
- Porcelain enamel (Minâ-kâri): Coloring and ornamenting the surface of metals (such as copper, silver, and gold) by fusing over brilliant colors that are decorated in an intricate design.
- Khâtam (also: khâtam-kâri): A version of marquetry where art forms are made by decorating the surface of wooden articles with delicate pieces of wood, bone and metal.
- Moaragh: Placing colored wooden pieces together and forming a specific shape.
- Carpet: A hand-woven artifact made of cotton, wool or silk. Iran has been famous for its carpet for a very long time. Hand-woven carpets can either be woven in carpet workshops or are Nomad carpet (Ashâyer carpet). Tourists are allowed to export a carpet up to 20 m2 from Iran. Tourists going to Iraq, Syria, and Saudi Arabia cannot export carpet from Iran.
Food
- Pistachio: Iranian pistachio is really famous amongst other pistachios of the world, and is also more delicious. Tourists usually buy a little amount of pistachio as souvenir. Tourists are allowed to buy and export up to 10 kilogram of pistachio.
- Saffron: Iran is one the main producers of saffron in the world. Due to its suitable price, tourists who love cooking usually prefer to buy their saffron from Iran. Each tourist is allowed to export up to 100 grams of saffron.
