Mount Damavand and its 2978 ha surrounding areas were recognized as a national natural monument in 2002 Having a height of 5671 m, this is the highest mountain of Iran and located 90 north east of the city of Tehran. The formations of Damavand cone is attributed to the quaternary period activities. The cone is made up of various color magmas and a considerable amount of sulfur is found at the crater of its inactive volcano. Some of the region are milfoil, groundsel, mountain sainfoin and astragal. In Iranian culture, Damavand symbolizes persistence and resilience. The dignity of the mount along with the geological features and vegetation cover of the area have attracted a great number of researchers and mountain climbers from all over the world.
